Hailakandi, Assam, March 30 (HBTV): Police authorities in Assam have seized wildlife and Indonesian bird species including a Babirusa, and Hornbills and Lories that allegedly were being smuggled from Indonesia.

A team of Hailakandi police personnel on Friday morning seized a larger number of Indonesian bird species from a Fortunner coming from Mizoram in the wee hours. The vehicle reportedly broke a barricade set up by the Bilaipur police team of Hailakandi district, near the Hailakandi-Mizoram border. The authorities chased down the vehicle and searched it. Close to 50 varieties of live Indonesian bird species were found inside, updates said.

The wildlife was allegedly being smuggled in from Indonesia. After entering Mizoram through Myanmar, they were being taken to West Bengal via Assam, said additional Superintendent of police Hailakandi Samir Baruah.

The birds included one Babirusa, two Hornbill birds, five black Lory, and 40 other red and blue Lory.

The Hailakandi police team arrested the driver of the vehicle, identified as one Moin Uddin Ali and his assistant, a Samsul Haque, both residents of Hojai in Assam.

Baruah said the investigations are on.

The wildlife would be handed over to the forest department very soon.
